Help Us Welcome Roger Carlson!

The next episode of our Friday Night Show airs on May 30th at 9pm Pacific time!

https://SubscribeToOurChannel.com/

Roger Carlson earned a master’s degree in studies of the future from the University of Houston, Clear Lake City Branch, Texas (UHCLC). The studies centered around the debates between the techno-optimists who predicted abundance and space commerce versus the pessimists who fretted about a new dark age caused by peak resources and the oncoming new ice age. UHCLC is handily near the Johnson Space Center (JSC), so space commerce got some favorable comments.

After graduation, Roger could not resist running away and joining the space circus. He commenced an editing and writing career of 35 years at JSC and then at Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California. JSC work started with the Space Shuttle design and testing … followed by the beginning of NASA’s long night of multiple redesigns.

Items that Roger supported at JPL including… please attend the episode for that list.

And SO MUCH more!

Roger has a brief presentation for us as well: Traveling the Silk Orbital Flyway to Space … with the Help of Markets

Here’s part of his brief about that…

“Space dreams now include settlements on the Moon and even Mars. However, even the SpaceX Falcon Heavy can only deliver payload to low Earth orbit at a bit less than two-thousand kilos per kilogram … and all the competitors cost much more. (March 4, 2025, https://ourworldindata.org/grapher/cost-space-launches-low-earth-orbit) The dreams simply cost too much, without further massive decreases in orbital costs.”

He wrapped up his bio to us like this…

“…there is still that lingering call of the wild—space travel dreams, proposals, and even slowly improving space flights. We need a lot more improvement if we are to build a spacefaring civilization.”

Sounds like an Everyday Spacer to me!

Galaxy Zoo: JWST

The next episode of our Friday Night Show airs on May 23rd at 9pm Pacific time!

https://SubscribeToOurChannel.com/

“Many different teams of scientists are using NASA’s latest space telescope, JWST to image galaxies so far away that they are back at the earliest time galaxies appear in the Universe.

“Tuesday 29th April 2025: we are thrilled to announce the launch of the Galaxy Zoo JWST project, with hundreds of thousands of galaxy images from the COSMOS-Web survey taken with the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST). COSMOS-Web is the largest of the extragalactic surveys approved on JWST. We’ll continue to work in the team to add more images from other JWST surveys, and try to meet our goal to work with you to classify all of the distant galaxies imaged by JWST in a consistent way

“For this new phase of Galaxy Zoo we’re joining the NASA Citizen Science family (everyone is welcome to classify; no citizenship needed).” ~Zooniverse

PROFILE: John W. Campbell

The next episode of our Friday Night Show airs on May 2nd at 9pm Pacific time!

https://SubscribeToOurChannel.com/

As an editor, John W. Campbell was a great influence (for good or bad) on the early days of science fiction (1938 – 1971).

Campbell published the first stories from some of the biggest writers, popularized science fiction, and wrote the story that became “The Thing.” He also got in trouble with the FBI and, later in his career, started to become more controversial and began the “New Wave” (New Age) science fiction movement, drifting away from the actual science.

This and other views led Isaac Asimov and some of Campbell’s biggest proponents to drift away from him.

Friday night, we’ll look at one of science fiction’s most influential and controversial figures.

UPDATE: MicroObservatory Online Robotic Telescopes

The next episode of our Friday Night Show airs on April 25th at 9pm Pacific time!

https://SubscribeToOurChannel.com/

Early last March, an email arrived requesting answers to a survey about “…our network of free-to-use robotic telescopes at the Center for Astrophysics | Harvard & Smithsonian…”

That sparked an idea for an UPDATE to a previous episode we did in on the network of telescopes, in February 2021. This episode will be an update and a bit of a deeper dive into this network. Also from that email…

“Your feedback will play a crucial role in helping to shape the future of open access to real telescopes. Let your voice be heard, and help us create an exciting future for remote observing!”

Since there may be some great things to look forward to from this network, let this episode serve as a reminder to watch for these developments in the future as well!
